Sandton: The City

Nov 22, 2019

Sandton! It’s prosperous, influential, trendy, and it’s interesting. Many years before Sandton became the business and leisure hub of Johannesburg, it was occupied by indigenous South African groups, such as the Tswana and Sotho people. After European settlement, three farms, Zandfontein, Driefontein, and Rietfontein, (and later Witkoppen and Cyferfontein), monopolised the area that would become Sandton.

The name Sandton was created by combining the names of the two surrounding suburbs: Bryanston and Sandown. Sandton City mall and tower, the brainchildren of Michael Rapp elevated Sandton’s downtrodden status. Businesses started moving from central Johannesburg to Sandton, and thus, the Sandton we know today was born.

Sandton is the financial hub of Johannesburg. Its majestic towers soar over the city and can be seen in locations miles away. The bright lights remind one of New York City, and welcome dreamers into Sandton’s compact, exclusive lifestyle. This includes visionary hotels and lavish service for all your needs, be it pampering, cuisine, or retail therapy.

Sandton City mall is one of the largest in Africa and has a classy choice of stores that entice many. Furthermore, it invites both tourists and patrons to visit Nelson Mandela Square, situated adjacent to the mall. The square offers a plethora of shops, restaurants, the Theatre on the Square as well as the iconic life-size statue of Nelson Mandela.

The charming Sandton buildings don’t stop there. Sandton’s powerhouse structures are under construction to elevate their Green Star ratings. This includes the new Discovery and Sasol buildings. The Sandton Gautrain is one of the greener modes of transport in the city, and the flagship of the Gautrain stations is situated in the heart of Sandton. It is near the Michelangelo Hotel and travels directly to and from nine different districts around Gauteng.

With so much to see, do, and experience, Sandton is a city in a league of its own. Whether it is to stay, eat or simply enjoy this city’s culture, one of our Legacy properties is sure you wow you at every turn.
